Sagarmatha (8,848.86 m) ’‘Top of the world is locally known as Chomolungma, “Goddess Mother of the World '' popularly known as Mount Everest. Everest is home to the indigenous Sherpa community, renowned for their good humour, strength, endurance, and mountaineering skills. The majestic mountains, high mountain valleys, diverse flora and fauna, isolated monasteries, the innate hospitality of the local people, and the smiling faces of the Sherpa are some of the major attractions of the Sagarmatha region.

In the Everest region, due to changes in altitude, the area offers diversity in flora and fauna. Birch, juniper, blue pines, firs, bamboo, and rhododendron are major vegetation types at lower altitudes. At higher elevations, all vegetation is dwarf trees and shrubs. As the altitude increases, plant life is restricted to lichens and mosses. Sagarmatha National Park is home to more than 118 species of birds, including the Himalayan Munal, the blood pheasant, the red-billed chough, the yellow-billed chough, Himalayan thars, Langur monkeys, martens, Himalayan wolves, and many others. Several rare mammal species, including the Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, and Red Panda, can also be found in this park. UNESCO listed SNP as a World Heritage Site of Natural Importance in 1979. Gokyo and the associated lakes are listed as Ramsar sites.

On May 29, 1953, Tensing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand first ascended Mt. Everest. Since 1953, thousands of climbers have climbed Everest. Kami Rita Sherpa has ascended the peak 30 times.

Besides mountain peaks, glaciers, rocks, flora, and fauna, the exclusive animal Sagarmatha Khumbu region is home to the Indigenous Sherpa community. Indigenous Sherpa and Sagarmatha are synonymous with each other. The renowned Tengboche and other monasteries are common gathering places to celebrate religious festivals and daily life. In addition to Tengboche, Thame, Khumjung, and Pangboche are some other famous monasteries where Buddhism is practised. Conservation-oriented Sherpa culture is the backbone of conservation in the Khumbu region. Sherpas have inhabited the region for the last four centuries. Their traditional practice of culture and religion includes the restriction of animal hunting and slaughtering and the reverence of all living beings. These practices, combined with indigenous natural resource management practices, have been major contributing factors to the successful conservation of Sagarmatha National Park. Also, the major source of glaciers provides freshwater-based benefits for people downstream.
