Khaptad is a plateau of grassland and forest consisting of tall fir, yew, rhododendron, oak, dense strands of bamboo, and smaller shrubs. In the lower altitudes, subtropical vegetation dominates the landscape; forests mainly consist of montane sal, pine, and alder species; and in the higher altitudes, temperate vegetation dominates the landscape. About 224 species of medicinal herbs are found inside the park. Along with Nepal's national bird Danphe, 266 species of birds are found inside the park. Varieties of butterflies, moths, and insects are important parts of the Khaptad ecosystem. The park provides habitat for some 20 species of mammals, including barking deer, wild boar, Goral, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, leopard, wild dogs, jackals, Rhesus, and Langur monkey with 135 species of flowers that bloom in the summer and late spring.
